Free wallpaper for widescreen

Good news for high resolution users. From 8 March 2011 on, we will progressively add two high resolutions in 16:9 wide format: the 1920 x 1080, the HDTV format used by more and more computer screens, and the 2560 x 1440 used by some iMac users. For most wallpapers these new high resolutions will be added within a few weeks. Some of our oldest wallpapers will not be available in those high resolutions, since masters are not available in a high enough quality.

However, we are convinced that pushing 16:9 formats for computer screens is a very wrong decision. 16:9 is a movie and TV format. It is NOT well suited for computer screens. Computer screens would better stick to 5:4 or 4:3 formats as they were in the recent past. Think about how silly it looks and how much screen area is wasted when you watch your portrait sized photos (those photos which are higher than wide) on a 16:9 screen. And think about how uncomfortable it is to just write a letter (A4 and letter paper are higher than wide too) on a silly 16:9 screen. Someone did not think further than the tip of he's nose...

On 11 March 2007, we did add some wallpaper sizes for those who would like to find free widescreen wallpaper and free PSP wallpaper on our web site.

Presently we have four 16/10 widescreen resolutions and two 16/9 widescreen resolution available at every gallery page.

The widescreen resolutions are the result of cropping the normal 4/3 wallpapers. With some wallpapers there will be no problem, i.e. nothing essential will be missing, while with other wallpapers there will be an important part of the picture that will be missing. You will decide for which image, cutting away a band from the top and from the bottom of the image is acceptable.

A small number of the wide wallpapers are stretched 4/3 wallpapers instead of cropped ones, e.g. the calendars.

The widescreen formats are often used on the screens of laptops and notebooks, but wide screens for desktops are also available.
