Setting up a wallpaper under Linux

Looking how to set-up a picture as your desktop wallpaper or desktop background under Linux ? Here are the answers: There is a fast method that may work with any operating system, directly from your internet browser. And there is what we call the proper method which consist to go to some kind of control panel and to select the image you want to use as wallpaper.

Fast method to install a wallpaper

With some browsers, you just need to click on the wallpaper image with the right mouse button and select

set as wallpaper

set as background

.

But some browsers do not have this option and in some cases the option exists but doesn't work. Below are the proper wallpaper installation methods for the Linux operating systems.

Detailed method to install a wallpaper under Linux

Gnome

This applies to Ubuntu or many other Linux distros with Gnome.
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk,
- Go to the menu

System / Preferences / Appearance

- Go to the tab

Background

and click the

Add

button
- A file dialog opens. Choose the folder and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously
- Select the Style among

Centered, Tiled, Scaled

, etc.

KDE

This applies to Kubuntu or many other Linux distros with KDE.
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk, go either through step (a) or step (b) then through the other steps.
a) Go to

K Menu / Sytem Settings

then

Appearance & behaviour / Desktop

.
b) Open the

KDE control center

by typing

kcontrol

into a console, then go to

Appearance & Themes / Background

.
- Select

Picture

and click on the

Open file dialog

button
- A file dialog opens. Choose the folder and the file name of the wallpaper image you did save previously
- Under Options, select the Position among

Centered, Tiled, Scaled

and many more.
- Click on the button

Xfce

This applies to Xubuntu or many other Linux distros with Xfce.
Once you did save your elected wallpaper picture on your hard-disk,
- Go to the menu

Applications / Settings / Settings manager

JWM

This applies to Puppy Linux with JWM i.e. Joe's Window Manager.

Menu / Desktop / Wallpaper setter

DSL Linux with JWM or Fluxbox

This applies to DSL Linux with JWM and to DSL with Fluxbox.

- Copy the wallpaper image to the folder

/opt/.backgrounds

to add it to the list of available wallpapers.
- Go to

DSL / System / Control Panel
